In many older Huntsville homes, the bathroom still has its original layout: a tub against the back wall, a toilet beside it and a small vanity. Updating it usually means changing some of that. We plan the plumbing with you before demolition, so the layout you want is one the pipes can support.

In houses over a crawl space, moving drains is fairly direct. On a slab, it means cutting and trenching the concrete, which we can do, but it adds cost. We explain that up front.

Moving a drain, toilet or vanity

Every fixture needs a drain at the right slope and a vent to keep it from gurgling. Moving a toilet a few feet means moving its drain and connecting to the vent. Adding a second sink means a new drain, new supply lines and new shut-off valves. We handle the rough-in while the walls are open, so everything is set before the drywall and tile go on.

Tub-to-shower conversions and new shower valves

Walk-in showers are the most common change we see. We remove the tub drain and valve, set a new shower drain, and install the valve and heads at the height you choose. This is also the moment to upgrade to a pressure-balancing or thermostatic valve that holds the water temperature steady. That includes digital controls, if you want one.

If the valve is worn and you’re not remodeling the room, shower repair replaces the cartridge or the valve.

Planning a bathroom remodel around the plumbing

A few plumbing choices are cheap to make early and expensive to change later. Pick the shower valve and trim before the tile goes up, because the valve sets where the handle and heads land. Decide on a wall-hung or floor-mounted toilet and the vanity width before rough-in, since both set where the drains go.

Keeping the toilet where it is saves the most money, especially on a slab. Moving a shower a few feet is usually simple. Older homes often still have galvanized supply lines behind the walls. When those walls are open for a remodel, it’s the cheapest time to replace them with new lines and new shut-off valves at each fixture.
